Hike 'n stitch AT BEACON ROCK STATE PARK, WA

Wednesday, October 17

Join myself and Outdoor Programs Coordinator for Friends of the Gorge, Kate Lindberg for a unique craft-hike opportunity. We’ll first hike up Beacon Rock (weather-permitting) for panoramic views up and down the Gorge. Afterwards we’ll get comfortable at the covered pavilion at Doetsch Day Use Site for an introductory lesson in embroidery before getting started on a holiday ornament project inspired by the Gorge’s natural beauty. All supplies included!

STITCHED WATERCOLOR PAINTING AT OCAC

Sat-Sun, June 23-24, 2018. 9am-4pm. at OCAC, Portland, OR

Combine two different mediums in this class! First we’ll explore mark making exercises in both watercolor and embroidery to create a personal language of embellishment. Then we’ll create a series of watercolor images, either abstract or based in reality. After the watercolors have dried, we’ll explore different methods of embellishing with embroidery and machine stitching. Students will leave with a collection of finished pieces and ideas to create even more on their own.

Students can paint either realistic or abstract paintings. We’ll learn embroidery stitches and different techniques to embellish the paintings.

We’ll start with mark making exercises to create our personal language of embellishment.

Day 1: Slide show of inspirational work and techniques. Play with mark making exercises and demos of different ways to paint with watercolor and stitch onto paper with machine and hand stitching. Day 1 will be a combination of work time and demonstration by instructor.

Day 2: Continue adding details to project. Explore methods of collage to add interest to images.

Prerequisites: Some experience with watercolor painting or stitching is helpful but not required.
