Hike 'n stitch on the Cape horn upper trail

Join myself and Outdoor Programs Coordinator Kate Lindberg for a unique art-hike opportunity. We’ll hike to panoramic views at the Nancy Russell Overlook where we’ll have an introductory lesson in embroidery and spend some time stitching your own patch. Participant fee includes all supplies and your own patch kit to take home. It's gonna be a fun one!
PRINTED IMAGE STITCHING AT OCAC
Sat-Sun, Aug. 18-19, 2018. 9am-4pm. at OCAC, Portland, OR
In this 2 day workshop at the Oregon College of Art and Craft (OCAC), we'll use our own photos/images that will be printed/ transferred onto fabric. We’ll start with mark making exercises to create a personal language of embellishments to apply to the photos. We’ll use fabric scraps and threads to embellish our photo imagery.
Day 1: Conceptualization, laying out ideas, exploration of mark making. Slide show of inspirational work and techniques. Start assembling collage pieces on fabric image, machine and hand stitching.
Day 2: Continue adding details to project. Review framing ideas for finishing pieces.
Prerequisites: Beginning/intermediate sewing
STITCHED WATERCOLOR PAINTING AT OCAC
Sat-Sun, June 23-24, 2018. 9am-4pm. at OCAC, Portland, OR
Combine two different mediums in this class! First we’ll explore mark making exercises in both watercolor and embroidery to create a personal language of embellishment. Then we’ll create a series of watercolor images, either abstract or based in reality. After the watercolors have dried, we’ll explore different methods of embellishing with embroidery and machine stitching. Students will leave with a collection of finished pieces and ideas to create even more on their own.
Students can paint either realistic or abstract paintings. We’ll learn embroidery stitches and different techniques to embellish the paintings.
We’ll start with mark making exercises to create our personal language of embellishment.
Day 1: Slide show of inspirational work and techniques. Play with mark making exercises and demos of different ways to paint with watercolor and stitch onto paper with machine and hand stitching. Day 1 will be a combination of work time and demonstration by instructor.
Day 2: Continue adding details to project. Explore methods of collage to add interest to images.
Prerequisites: Some experience with watercolor painting or stitching is helpful but not required.
